Linda Evangelista and The Statement Thong...
I know- my titles just keep getting weirder and weirder...
Linda in the Haus
This month’s Vogue UK cover is the lovely Linda Evangelista. One of the original OG supers she disappeared without a trace and ressurfaced recently amidst a controversial lawsuit against aesthetics company Zeltiq CoolSculpting, citing a body-contouring treatment that went wrong, leaving her permanently scarred. And now British Vogue editor Edward Enninful has cleverly brought her back for a gorgeous cover shoot and extended story on where she’s been (a dark, sad place) and where she’s going (trying to find her happiness).
Linda was always one of my favourites. An Italian heritage, a fabulous name, those monthly hair changes and striking feline eyes made her different and interesting. In a world of same-same TikTok stars, it’s lovely to look back at someone who loved and embraced art and fashion with her entire being. She was electric on the catwalk and in front of the lens. That nose was untouched and dramatic. The attitude was fierce. So it fills me with such sadness that she couldn’t age gracefully and her career and life have suffered as a result of her quest for perfection.
She openly states that her vanity got the better of her, hence the search for a treatment to shave off ‘stubborn’ pockets of fat which sadly backfired and left her “brutally disfigured” (her words). For this shoot she wants to make it clear that Pat McGrath gently taped back her neck and face. Apart from her face, the rest of her body is also strategically hidden. That said the Steven Meisel shots are beautiful and interesting. She looks radiant. In a world constantly looking forward sometimes it’s nice to look back. This week I’m revelling in the Linda that was and the Linda that is. Enjoy…

Another day, another semi-naked celeb
WHYYYYYYYYYY is the statement thong back? A question I never thought I had to ask. And yes I’m using capital letters to indicate my frustration. Sorry about the shouting but I don’t understand why Doja Cat is shouting ‘YES’ with her underwear. I really thought we had left the visible thong behind in the same place we left Sisqó (who? exactly). But it appears the visible underwear trend is alive and well.
Glamour calls it, ‘A maverick move in the world of underwear fashion.’ REALLY? Is it? A maverick move? And since when is there a thing called ‘underwear fashion’? Underwear styles- yes. ‘Fashion’ which comes with an added element of public consumption and acceptance - no. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines fashion as:
Fashion - Noun. fashion, style, and fad mean the way that up-to-date people do things. fashion is used of any custom (as a way of dressing or behaving) that is widely accepted at any one time or place.
Are you telling me I must accept the statement thong as a widely accepted custom?
I really thought we had seen the last of the underwear shots after that awful period of paparazzi snapping under Britney and co’s skirts in the early Noughties. It was bad enough that female celebs were being snapped getting out of cars in short skirts. But photographers actually reaching out and snapping under said skirts was next level revolting. And now we have a celeb actually showing us her underwear - NO REACHING AND SNAPPING REQUIRED! Yes more shouting. Sorry about that but could someone, anyone, please enlighten me? Why oh why are we devolving?
